Confluence: The Tina Freeman Collection of Photographs

In 1969, Tina Freeman began amassing what would become an exceptional collection of photographs: a broad and eclectic group ranging from the nineteenth century to the present, boasting strength in European and American modernism, photographs by women makers, and nineteenth-century landscapes, among other categories. Confluence celebrates the promised bequest of Freeman's collection to the New Orleans Museum of Art. Including more than thirteen hundred works by over 270 photographers, the collection constitutes the most significant single gift of photographs in the institution's history.

Featuring 185 beautiful full-color reproductions, Confluence includes works by significant artists like Manuel Álvarez Bravo, George Barnard, Ilse Bing, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Julia Margaret Cameron, Imogen Cunningham, George Dureau, Gertrude Käsebier, Clarence John Laughlin, Lisette Model, Irving Penn, and Edward Weston, among others. Selections reflect Freeman's gravitation toward lesser-known works, revealing subjects and processes that broaden our understanding of many photographers. The catalogue plates, arranged without regard to genre or period, are sequenced to give an impression of how Freeman-- herself an accomplished photographer-- discerned visual relationships between one picture and the next. Whether the connections between images are primarily compositional or conceptual, the results here are often playful and always thought-provoking. Confluence includes an edited conversation between Freeman and curator Jeff L. Rosenheim (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and an essay by curator Emilia Mickevicius (Center for Creative Photography). Finally, Confluence includes a detailed checklist of the entire collection. Together, this volume offers a survey of photographic history through the eyes of a remarkable collector and a richly illustrated reminder of the power of photographic objects.
