The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art is one of the foremost sculpture gardens in the United States. The nearly five-acre Garden opened in 2003 with fifty works of art by modern and contemporary artists of international renown, including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, George Segal, and Louise Bourgeois.
The book explores the history of this award-winning space and highlights work from its superb collection, which spans from the neoclassical figures of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to the twenty-first century pieces by Do-Ho Suh and Leandro Erlich. This book provides, for the first time, in-depth entries on each of the outstanding sculptures in the garden, and an exploration of the vision of the Garden’s founding patrons: Sydney and Walda Besthoff. With stunning photography and detailed information on the Garden’s artwork and explanations of its plant life, this will be a reference guide for years to come.
Since the book was published, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden doubled in size in 2019 and has grown from its inception to include more than 90 sculptures, most of them donated to NOMA by the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Foundation.
